The surf has been no where near challenging in the past 2 years now, we've had some 10-12 foot days last year (thanksgiving) but that was it! Now the rumor has it that this year will be firing... I better start stretching or something. Maybe pull-ups and sit-up's, I can't even do one pull-up but i can duck-dive a 12 foot wave. What give's...?
I like to head down the interchange is Interstate 280 and Hwy 101, right around the SF airport and play Frogger. That builds up the reflexes and helps with the fear factor.
Pullouts won't work. Pushups girl! Do the push ups, then reps where you do a push up and actually jump up into surfing position. I cycle for the cardio. Otherwise the best medicine is surfing, yoga, and actually Pilates.
Maybe we should "Ask Beth". Tell her to get over here!
You are so funny, i haven't laughed out loud to a computer in a long time, Alex your advice is GREAT! I will try your "frogger game" Friday evening between 5pm and 6:30pm, that should be a good challenge. Pushups...I guess i'll try with one for now, then two and hopfully, I can do 5 whole ones by the end of this year and start with the stand-up to a surfing postion routine, next year. I do yoga, run, swim, hike, bike, dance, climb trees, chase cats and ride bulls...yes it keeps the butt firm and everything high and tight but still...not the same. I like this disussion stuff, great work!
I hear kelly Slater stands on a large swiss ball (huge yoga ball people use to sit on) holding weights and rotating his hips at the same time, very impressive. Must help with something surfing related.
Good Lord my spelling was awful in that last reply. Pullouts instead of pull-ups.
Just like skiing, the only medicine to help with the sport is the actual sport. I've recently been trying the core workouts. They were helping, but then I fell off the wagon and spent more time working than working out.
If Slater is doing the yoga ball thing, he stole the idea from Mick. ;-) They're both building the core on those things.
When I blew my shoulder out the best way to get in paddle shape was to lay chest down on a bar stool (not actually at the bar, but at home) and stick one end of a resistance band under the leg of the stool, hold the other end in one hand and pretend I was paddling. Then I'd fasten it into the door in front of me and do the same thing.
I'll try that! Beth is busy being new mommy and she loves it. She's not working anymore unless someone asks her for help and i can tell she misses it a little. But she's getting back into surfing, we surfed together last week and she kept complaining about how out of shape she is, she's been biking alot. But now that the season is creeping closer Beth knows it time to shape up, so you'll see her around alot more, we usually surf together weekday mornings from 9:30am-12pm (when there is surf).
She's looking great and is so in love with her child...she was meant to be a mom. But now that the kid is getting a little older she's starting to break free more often and for longer. YAY Beth!!!
